The British Journal of Nutrition published findings on coconut oil in the prevention (and treatment) of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Their fascinating review of thousands of prior studies was undertaken by multiple universities and medical centers in Australia and New Zealand.
– The saturated fat in coconut oil shouldn’t rule it out as an addition to your diet. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil sets it apart from other saturated fats. MCFAs are absorbed and metabolized by your liver with very little effort.

– Ketones – an alternative fuel source for the human brain – are metabolized from coconut oil. For people who have difficulty metabolizing glucose (a common issue among patients with Alzheimer’s), ketones can literally keep portions of the brain from starvation and atrophy.
– Extra virgin organic coconut oil is a nutritious food source, bursting with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Hydrogenated coconut oils (processed) do not have these same benefits.
– The researchers confirmed that mounting evidence points to the use of extra virgin organic coconut oil in the treatment and prevention of obesity, high cholesterol (especially low-density lipoproteins – LDL), insulin resistance, and high blood pressure. The same effects were not seen in studies that used hydrogenated coconut oil.
Since these are all considered critical bio-markers in the development of heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disease (AD), this is excellent news!
– Natural phenols and plant-based hormones found in coconut oil may help to slow down or even prevent the formation of amyloid-b peptides (amino acids found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease).
– Multiple studies confirmed the brain benefits of coconut oil. Researchers noted measurable cognitive improvement of AD-affected participants when diet was supplemented with extra virgin organic coconut oil. Hydrogenated coconut oil did not have the same effect.
– Several studies have confirmed that coconut oil does not raise lipid profile (blood fats) as claimed by hydrogenated oil manufacturers and government organizations in the past.
They went on to conclude, “Coconut is widely available, inexpensive, nontoxic, and highly palatable, and consuming a regular intake of good quality coconut oil or another coconut product may become a simple yet important dietary change that may reduce the risk of AD.”
Authors of the study state several times that the processing method directly affected the quality of coconut oils and may directly impact how effective it is.
We Listened to the Wrong “Experts”
The humble coconut has sustained many tropical civilizations for thousands of years. These island nations are (by far) healthier, happier, and more youthful than adults in developed countries.

In the past four decades, the American population has been strong-armed to live a “low-fat” lifestyle. Based on a few (now disputed) studies, fat was stripped from our.
Foods like eggs, butter, and coconut oils were the focus of major marketing campaigns to convince consumers to stop using them. They were considered harbingers of heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes.
Traditional fats (used for generations in moderation) were replaced with products laden with chemicals, sugars such as high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and a massive share of grain-based foods. They were supposedly healthier than fat.
