A Swedish study from the Karolinska Institutet, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, connected lower levels of vitamin E with an increased risk of dementia. More than 70% of diagnosed Alzheimer’s cases affect men and women over 75 years of age.
The researchers studied more than 200 participants for several years. Their outcome found that those in the study who consumed the highest levels of vitamin E tested with a 45% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Francesca Mangialasche explained, “Elderly people are large consumers of vitamin E supplements, which usually contain only [alpha]-tocopherol, and this often at high doses. Our findings open up for the possibility that the balanced presence of different vitamin E forms can have an important neuroprotective effect.”
