There are days when you look forward to a little music, great food, and a glass of good red wine to settle your mind and let go of your stress.
Red wine made our superfood list when it was discovered that healthy ingredient in red wine, called resveratrol (a potent antioxidant/healthy compound) has health benefits from reducing your risk of cancer, boosting energy levels, protecting your heart, keeping your arteries clear, improving prostate health and it even has remarkable anti-aging properties to help you live healthier and longer.Red wine health benefits vary from reducing your risk of cancer, boosting energy levels, and protecting your heart!Click To Tweet
But did you realize drinking red wine can help combat the effects of sitting at a desk all day or not being able to move due to an injury?
A recently published study in FASAB Journal, involved studying astronauts – since it is nearly impossible for them to exercise in the weightless environment of space.
The effects of space mimicked a normal sedentary lifestyle. As a result the group fed Resveratrol did not experience loss of bone density, decreased insulin resistance, or loss of muscle mass over time because of a lack of exercise.
According to Gerald Weissmann, M.D., “Resveratrol benefits may not be a substitute for exercise, but it could slow deterioration until someone can get moving again.”
The same scenario applies if you spend all day in front of a computer. Resveratrol benefits slows the gradual deterioration your body undergoes when you don’t get enough exercise. It isn’t the only answer – nothing replaces a healthy diet and regular exercise long-term.
Still, getting that extra layer of protection from resveratrol if you aren’t able to exercise regularly can definitely help protect your health.
Can The Red Wine Health Benefits Prevent Cancer?
Another important life saving benefit of Resveratrol should not to be overlooked is that it’s a proven cancer fighter.
Resveratrol stops the growth of breast cancer cells by blocking estrogen and actually reduced existing cells in lab studies. The results for prostate cancer were even higher.Resveratrol in red wine stops the growth of breast cancer cells! #RedWineHealthBenefits #WineFacts #ResveratrolClick To Tweet
There was an 87% reduction in prostate cancer risk for mice treated with Resveratrol. Of the subjects who already had cancer, 48% responded to Resveratrol benefits treatments administered in food – a complete stop or drastic slow-down of cancer cell growth and spreading.
Want more good news?
Add dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or higher (available in most supermarkets) and you naturally increase your intake of Resveratrol.
Both of these “happy” foods have been shown to lower blood sugar and increase your “good” cholesterol. If indulgence in red wine and dark chocolate (within reason) equals a healthier heart – who am I to argue?
Resveratrol benefits is also being studied as treatment for the following:
- Alzheimer’s prevention and other neuro-degenerative diseases
- Arthritis and other inflammation-based diseases
- Antiviral effects in regards to various forms of herpes and flu
Doctors recommend that men drink two glasses of red wine a day and women drink one. Having 2-3 squares of dark chocolate daily will give your body that extra boost.Doctors recommend that men drink two glasses of red wine a day and women drink one. #RedWineHealthBenefits #WineFactsClick To Tweet
Resveratrol can be found in supplements if you’re not a drinker or a fan of dark chocolate but, as with most things, your body prefers the dietary version and processes it best.
